No Man's Sky: How to Get a Free Freighter

You can get yourself a free Freighter at the start of No Man's Sky, saving you a huge amount of credits. We'll explain how, and more, in the No Man's Sky Free Freighter guide. Let's take a look.

It's pretty easy to do this, as you'll just need to reach a few hours into the game. By knowing how to trigger the free Freighter, you can actually keep doing it until an S-Class shows up.

How to get a No Man's Sky free Freighter

To get a free Freighter, you will need to play through the main story until you have fixed your ship and carried out your first warp. You'll now have the recipe for Warp Cells, and can fill the Hyperdrive. Keep warping from galaxy to galaxy until you reach a battle between a Freighter and small fighter ships. This took 3 or 4 warps for me. You'll need to destroy the attacking fighters, and will then receive a transmission from the captain of the Freighter. He'll invite you aboard. Do so and you can get his Freighter for free.

Getting a free S-Class Freighter

If you choose to decline the first offer you get, you can actually keep warping until you get offered a new Freighter. There's a small chance that each one will be an S-Class, so don't be afraid to wait a while until you get better options. We recommend declining the first free Freighter you are offered, as there's a high chance you will find a better one later down the line. You can only receive one free Freighter per playthrough, so choose wisely.
