How to save in Sons of the Forest

Before you head into a new dark and scary cave or bunker, you'll want to know how to save in Sons of the Forest. Saving is a necessary part of survival games. Not only is this necessary when you want to log off, but saving all that hard work before your character's potential demise can help alleviate the frustration that comes with a potentially bad decision.

Though you can do it almost immediately, you might miss some of the signs showing you how to do it early on. If you have some familiarity with the genre, you should be able to pick it up pretty quickly. It just doesn't follow the same formula of using the main escape menu as most other PC games.

How to save in Sons of the Forest

You cannot save Sons of the Forest through the menu and the game does not have an autosave function. It may not be as intuitive as other games, but there is a way to save your progress manually.

To save in Sons of the Forest, you need to create a rudimentary shelter first. You can do this with one stick and one piece of tarp, but you can find better shelter recipes in our Sons of the Forest blueprints list. Luckily, both of these can be found at the plane crash at the very start of the game.

From here, pop the tarp in your hand and you will see a building view showing a small white square under you.

Pick where you want your base to be and put it down. Then you just have to put the stick in the corner and your base will have been built. Go up to the shelter and click 'E' to save.

You want to do this almost immediately upon entering the game. You can move this shelter around and it will show up on the map whenever you build it.
