No one can deny Red Dead Redemption 2 was a runaway hit last generation. Released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, it wasn't quite as successful as Grand Theft Auto V, but Rockstar Games latest adventure in the declining Wild West saw 38 million sales, a figure that's still gradually climbing.

With Sony and Microsoft moving towards the new generation with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, many have wondered if Rockstar's got plans to update Red Dead Redemption 2 for the improved hardware. Here's what we know so far.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Is It Coming To PS5 or Xbox Series X|S?

Unfortunately, Rockstar's said nothing about a remastered edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox Series X|S or PS5. There's also been no suggestion that they'll offer improvements via backwards compatibility, which we've seen boost framerates for games like Horizon Zero Dawn or The Last of Us Part II.

With Grand Theft Auto V: Enhanced and Expanded edition's coming out later this year, Rockstar could simply be focusing their efforts on that instead before enhancing Red Dead Redemption 2, though that remains speculative.

Update: January 11th, 2022

According to insider AccountNGT, Rockstar Games is more likely to announce a PS5 patch for Red Dead Redemption 2. They also claim its likely they'll announce a remaster for the original Red Dead Redemption too. However, AccountNGT doesn't believe a 2022 release is likely, even if an announcement is.

Rockstar Games aren't strangers to remasters, having previously tacked the recent Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, though that saw mixed reception. We'll have to wait for an official confirmation in the meantime.
