August 24, 2023: The No Man's Sky Echoes update has arrived, so check out whether the game has crossplay.

No Man's Sky has seen one of the greatest video game revivals in recent memory. It started out as an overambitious concept that ultimately launched riddled with bugs, unimpressive gameplay, and false promises. One such false promise was that No Man's Sky would feature multiplayer at launch, which it did not.

However, fast forward to 2023, and the developers at Hello Games have made almost intergalactic strides in adding many of those promised features to No Man's Sky. One of those features was multiplayer, which was introduced in the famous 1.5 'NEXT' update. With the arrival of multiplayer, though, fans have an additional question surrounding a popular feature within the gaming industry. That question is whether or not No Man's Sky supports crossplay or not.

Does No Man's Sky have crossplay?

Crossplay is a feature that has really become an expectation for players in any multiplayer title. It essentially allows players to play with their friends who are on another system. This gives all users a chance to experience their favourite multiplayer games with any one of their friends, regardless of their platform.

And luckily for players who take advantage of crossplay, yes, No Man's Sky now has crossplay. This feature was added in an update during the summer of 2020, and has worked fairly well ever since. Players on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC can all play together, either from the multiplayer menu in-game, or by adding friend codes when starting from the main menu. Let's go into a bit more detail on setting up crossplay.

How to play with friends using crossplay

You have two options when wanting to play with friends using crossplay. The first is if you are at the main menu, before loading up a save. Do the following to create a multiplayer session:

  • Select 'Multiplayer'
  • Use Friend Codes to add players (these can be found in the under the 'show friend code tab)
  • Create session

If you're already in a game, then just press pause, and do the following:

  • Head to the 'Options' menu
  • Select 'Network'
  • Make sure Multiplayer is enabled
  • Use your friend code to be added into someone's game, or to bring them into yours

If you are already in a session of No Man's Sky and choose to add a friend to your game, they will be transported to your specific system in the galaxy. It's then up to you and your party to figure out how to get to one another. You can only have a party of up to four players, so keep that in mind when inviting or joining friends in No Man's Sky.

If you don't choose to make a party, then you can still meet players using crossplay by using the Nexus system. This is essentially a large hub where a wider range of players can interact. The Nexus is located in the Space Anomaly, so if you tell a friend to meet you there who you know is in your instance of the game, they need to have unlocked this feature in No Man's Sky.
