Elden Ring mod overhauls Great Runes to give permanent effects that aren’t too overpowered

While they may not have any massive expansions to dig into quite yet, Elden Ring players are still keeping themselves busy, with the long-awaited Colosseum DLC providing a fresh challenge for many who now consider traditional boss battles to be old news.

That said, sometimes even the acts of butchering an endless supply of bloodthirsty fellow players or emulating streamer MissMikkaa’s run through the game on two devices at once can get stale if you’re using the same combat strategy you always end up going for.

If you’re in search of a way to spice up your next attempt to battle Malenia and Radahn simultaneously or slay an entire army of rats and don’t fancy some ridiculous dodge animations, a new mod might be worth adding to your load order.

Feel like your next Elden Ring build needs less help from great runes?

The mod in question is called ‘Great Rune Overhaul’ and is the first-ever work of modder Blabla456456.

They’ve decided to give the numerous great runes you can earn by slaying some of the most powerful bosses in The Lands Between: “minor effects that always stay active, providing permanent upgrades every time you acquire one, without making you overpowered.”

With the mod installed, you’ll end up with runes that will give you a bunch of fairly minimalist passive buffs which shouldn’t be as powerful as those given to the runes by either the vanilla game or existing overhauls like OmecaOne’s ‘Greater Runes’ and maverickheart’s ‘Untarnished Great Runes’.

For example, once you’ve activated it at a divine tower, the mod’s version of Godrick's Great Rune will grant an extra point to your strength, dexterity, endurance, intellect, faith and arcane attributes. It'll also add 50 to your item discovery stat, rather than simply raising all of your all attributes by five.

If that sounds good to you, you’ll first need to grab ‘Mod Engine 2’ and follow the install instructions in the mod’s description.

On the other hand, if you don’t find Blabla456456’s changes match with what you want out of the runs, you could try ArthraX9’s ‘GRR - Great Runes Revisited’ instead.

Regardless of whether your Tarnished is now enjoying the rewards of their latest victory over Malenia, make sure to follow us for coverage of some interesting streamers and guides to Elden Ring’s newest addition.
