Hogwarts Legacy was one of 2023’s biggest success stories, with some reports claiming that it was the best-selling title of last year. Warner Bros. has since stated that they will be pumping out more Harry Potter games as a result, which won’t be a surprise to anyone.
During an interview with Variety (via VGC), Warner Bros. touted the fact that their wizarding RPG sold 22 million copies last year. The hope is that they will follow Legacy up with more Harry Potter games, starting with this year’s free-to-play Quidditch Champions game.
No actual Harry Potter games were named, aside from Quidditch Champions, though President David Hadad did say “a series of other things” are in the works. Fans shouldn’t be too surprised if one of those games is a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, given how successful the open-world RPG was.
While Legacy did come out with positive reviews, many fans do feel that the game is lacking in terms of actual Harry Potter content. Quidditch is referenced so much in the game that fans were hoping it would be added as DLC later on. That won’t be happening, as the free-to-play Quidditch Champions will be filling in for that disappointment.
It will be interesting to see what Warner Bros. has planned for their next Harry Potter or Hogwarts Legacy game, especially since there aren’t a lot of them available. Previous comments from WB did indicate that the next Potter game will be live-service, which would be a huge disappointment. Then again, with most gamers turning on the live-service genre, it looks like plans will need to change.
Even though Hogwarts Legacy didn’t end up getting any Game of the Year nominations, it still sold copies and got several people into gaming. It’s just a shame that a lot of this money is going to a person like J.K. Rowling, who hasn’t been the best person lately.
