While some GTA Online players are already looking forward to GTA 6, others are still trying to enjoy everything that Los Santos has to offer by spending all of their hard-earned cash, grinding out a few more heists or becoming a lifeguard in story mode.

After all, if you don’t enjoy trying to predict what the next game’s map will look like, lack any hot takes regarding what or who it should include, and have given up on planning out your first playthrough, why not just try to appreciate the final stretch of GTA Online?

While some players are currently busy waving farewell to the game’s red Shark Card, others are spending their time trying to work out the history of one of its most beloved heist locations, Cayo Perico island.

Have you ever wondered what was on GTA Online’s island heist location before El Rubio bought it?

Their theories form the subject of a recent thread on the GTA Online subreddit, which began with a post from user German_99, who kicked things off by asking: “What do you think Cayo Perico was used for before El Rubio came to the island?”

The hardened criminals in the thread were quick to don their archaeological gear and begin to develop theories about the island’s history, with many different conclusions being reached.

For instance, some were convinced that the island once served as some kind of military base, with user TrueMoods pointing out the apparent age of some of the island’s buildings as evidence of this, while Saukko505 pointed to the cold war-style vehicles used by its resident, though Tanker-Number-1284 argued that these could simply have been imported.

On the other hand, some users suggested that it might simply have been inhabited by pirates or native tribes prior to its acquisition, with user Nicholas7907 pointing out: “Cayo Perico is based on Norman's Cay, real island used by the Medellin Cartel,” and theorising that “it looks like some local people could have been living there (before Rubio’s arrival).”

Meanwhile, some users weren’t willing to entertain this kind of deep GTA lore discussion, with user InfiniteOscar1 declaring: “Nothing (was there), it was probably (just an) island.”

Regardless of whether you’re going to try and threaten El Rubio into telling you the history of Cayo Perico next time you visit, make sure to follow us for more GTA 6 and GTA Online updates as new vehicles and more arrive.
