Activision's Call of Duty franchise contains a wealth of characters spanning multiple periods of history. Whether it's Black Ops or Modern Warfare, there are several familiar faces that have become symbols of the series and remain so as attention turns towards the launch of Modern Warfare 3.

Thanks to reveals surrounding the single-player campaign, Sledgehammer Games' latest project has already been confirmed to feature the returns of the talismanic Captain Price, some other Task Force 141 members, and an iconic villain.

Actors working on MW3 have continued to tease their potential involvement in the latest Modern Warfare storyline. Now, players have spotted an Instagram post that they think could potentially hint at two characters being set to return from the dead in the game.

Some Call of Duty characters might be coming back from the dead

Back in May, actor Gene Farber uploaded a picture showing them alongside Konstantin Lavysh and another talent during a motion-capture session. A few months later, user Personal-Thing2212 has shared the post on Reddit suggesting they think it could hint that Barkov and Kamarov, from previous CoD titles, could be on their way back.

Barkov first appeared in 2019's Modern Warfare as the main antagonist for Task Force 141 and was last seen falling from a helicopter after Farah inflicted multiple stab wounds on him. Kamarov last appeared in 2011's Modern Warfare 3, but met his demise at the hands of Makarov.

While some players are embracing the idea of a potential flashback mission, others aren't convinced it'd be necessary to resurrect the characters. One player asked: "How? How? (Barkov) dropped off a helicopter in mid-air. How does he survive?"

Call of Duty is no stranger to implementing flashback missions into its stories. The likes of 'All Ghillied Up' from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare form some of the most recognisable levels the shooter series has featured.

The potential returns of Barkov and Kamarov could lead to several twists and turns in the Modern Warfare 3 campaign and with the period of campaign early access fast approaching, it won't be long before we find out whether the two characters will actually factor into the story.

For now, though, it's worth taking this Insta post-based rumour with a pinch of salt until Call of Duty Next, which is bound to reveal more Modern Warfare 3 intel.
