The Pokémon Charmander stood in front of a blurry background.

Wondering how to get Charmander in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? The Kanto starter is one of the most recognisable Pokémon in the entire series, so we can understand why you'd want to add it to your team. Fortunately, recent leaks suggest Charmander will appear in the new games. But there's some confusion as to how you catch Charmander.

In this Pokémon Scarlet and Violet guide, we'll give you some pointers on catching yourself a Charmander. Note that is isn't quite as straightforward as most players will hope for. We'll also list the evolution levels for Charmander in the game, so you can work towards raising a powerful Charizard.

How to get Charmander in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

As of right now, the process of adding Charmander to your Pokédex is a complicated one. It doesn't seem like the Fire-type Pokémon will naturally lurk in the Paldean wild - though it's very possible as part of the post-game content. What we do know, though, is that you can breed a Charizard to get a Charmander egg.

Yes, official Scarlet and Violet news has revealed that Charizard will be the first Black Crystal Tera raid opponent. If you're able to beat the raid, either solo or with co-op partners, you'll get the chance to catch a Charizard as your reward.

Once you've got a Charizard, you can use the new breeding mechanic to net yourself a fresh Charmander. That seems to be the only way to grab the original Fire-type starter as it stands.

Because the Charizard raid battle is only available for a limited time, you might not be able to get Charmander this way if you don't catch one in time. Trading and transferring from other games will still be possible, but with Pokemon Home not working with the games until 2023, your options will be limited.

What level does Charmander evolve in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

Unless it's changed for some reason in the latest games, expect your Charmander to evolve into Charmeleon at level 16 and again into Charizard at level 36.
