Mortal Kombat 1 is trying to squeeze even more money from its fanbase, staining the reputation of this otherwise great fighting game. As if microtransactions and DLC fighters weren’t enough, NetherRealms has also confirmed that there will be Seasonal Fatalities that players can only get with real money.
Fans on Twitter were quick to ask about the Halloween Fatality after it was mentioned in the fighter’s most recent patch notes. When one fan reached out to WB Games Support on Twitter, the company responded by saying it would only be available in the Premium Shop.
Naturally, many fans were disgusted with the move, as Fatalities are a fun part of Mortal Kombat 1 and should already be in the standard release. Unfortunately, this news is far from surprising, as the folks at NetherRealm have been charging for Fatalities since MKX.
Both MKX and MK11 had different forms of Fatalities that could only be obtainable through real-world money. Whether it was the Easy Fatality, which removed the complicated combination and got straight to the gore, or the Klassic Fatalities from previous games, these all cost money. Sadly, we’re seeing this pattern return with the Halloween Fatality and, presumably, more Festive Fatalities.
Gamers already tolerated paying for costumes and DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 1, so seeing paid Fatalities rear their ugly head is disappointing. Sadly, NetherRealms has been doing this since MKX and Injustice 2, so it looks like the company won’t be stopping this anytime soon.
Some fans will argue that these things are “optional” so people shouldn’t be mad about it, but that’s not an excuse for the company’s greed. Most fans have been conditioned to accept paid costumes and characters, but locking finishers/Fatalities behind paywalls feels wrong since they’re a big part of the gameplay.
