So, if you're looking for a hard drive, Amazon Prime Day 2020 is a great place to start. Here's what you need to know ahead of the sales.

Budget

Going for an HDD is typically the cheaper way to go, but if you're looking to save money, you may need to stay around the 1 TB or 2 TB storage bracket.

Hard Drives and Next-Gen 

If you're planning on getting either an HDD or SSD for next-gen, it's worth knowing what's going to work, and what may not with PS5 and Xbox Series X.

There's a lot of talk about backwards compatibility from both sides, but here's what we know so far.

PS5 and External Hard Drives

You can use an HDD for PS5, but only to play PS4 games.

PS5 has its own custom SSD which has been designed specifically for playing PS5 games.

Some, but not all, off the shelf SSDs will be compatible with PS5.

Xbox Series X

You can use an HDD for Xbox Series X, but only to play Xbox One and Xbox 360 games. 

You can store backups of Xbox Series X games on an HDD, but they must be moved to the SSD to be played on the console.

There will be an official licensed 'storage expansion card' SSD for the console, which will greatly increase its storage.
