Why I Changed My Mind on Crimson Desert: From Launch Skeptic to Steam Cart

  • Key Update: Following a rocky March 2026 launch, Pearl Abyss released rapid patches addressing clunky controls and difficulty spikes, successfully lifting Steam user reviews to "Very Positive".

  • Quick Answer: Crimson Desert has largely overcome its launch issues through aggressive post-release patching that refined combat controls, improved QoL, and optimized early-game difficulty.

When Crimson Desert first came out, I was quick to judge. But now, my opinion has changed.

During Crimson Desert's launch day, I (like so many others) scoured the internet for reviews. And what I saw was less than favorable - complaints about clunky gameplay, the lackluster story, and the glitches that made it unbearable. Reading all of that made me think Crimson Desert was a game not worth the $70 price tag. After all, why would I spend my hard-earned money on a game that barely works?

Well, looks like I need to put my money where my mouth is, because I now have Crimson Desert in my Steam Cart.

Why I Judged Crimson Desert Hard During Launch

When Crimson Desert first launched, I wrote about why I thought the game wouldn't be worth it. As a self-professed open-world newbie, it felt overwhelming. Exhausting, even.

The biggest drawback was the backlash over combat. As someone who uses a controller to play, the fact that some buttons are used for more than one action (and can be triggered by moving the tiniest inch to the left) was something I was not thrilled about.

Additionally, reviews claimed that the story and characters were bland. That, paired with the resounding complaints of how difficult the puzzles and bosses were even during the early game, was a huge turn off.

But one thing kept me interested - the open world. You can do practically anything - ride dragons, have pets, even customize the characters. This was, at first, the only reason I still considered giving Crimson Desert a chance. But I thought I'd only play it if I received it as a gift.

Why I Yearn to Play Crimson Desert Now

I was under the belief that Pearl Abyss would defend themselves from the backlash. But I was wrong.

Not only did they agree with user feedback, but they actively released several patches to improve QoL. In a week, Steam reviews went from "Mixed" to "Very Positive." All complaints about the controls being impossible and the enemies being too OP went out the window.

It really shows how important it is when a company can take feedback with grace and work on improving something. Crimson Desert isn't just playable now - it's actually enjoyable (even on the PS5, which I was worried about since that's where I want to play it!) Seeing the gameplay of people discovering secret treasures and dressing up their furry companions has officially converted my stance.

Was I right to be hesitant? Maybe at first. But now, I want nothing more than ever to play Crimson Desert. In fact, it's in my Steam cart right now, so if my friends are reading this: if you don't hear from me for a while, this is why.
