- Quick Answer: ARC Raiders’ Shrouded Sky update introduces the Comet and Firefly enemies plus the Hurricane Event, making PvE runs harder with deadlier machines and shield-draining weather effects.
Before dipping my toes into Bungie’s Marathon, I took a few runs in ARC Raiders to see if the game had improved since my last visit. I had to stop midway through my Expedition journey because of the countless backlogs I’ve ignored over the past few months, including the newly released Resident Evil: Requiem. So here I am, back in Speranza, looking for some mighty fine loot to finally take my poor Raider to greener pastures.
I’ve been hearing good things about the latest “Shrouded Sky” update, especially with the addition of two new Arc machines that are definitely going to mess up our mojo. I mean, the Rocketeers and Shredders are already a problem, so I was already dreading the arrival of these new clankers that were bound to ruin my runs.
There I go, trying out the new Hurricane Event in Spaceport, seeing what this new weather condition had in store for me. I’ve had my fair share of incremental weather during the Cold Snap event, so watching my shields gradually deplete over time wasn’t a big issue. Then I encountered a massive Arc ball. At first, I thought it was just your regular Surveyor, but the moment it locked its eyes on me, I knew this was one of the new machines Embark had added to the game: the Comet.

To keep the suspense short, I was immediately blown to smithereens and sent back to Speranza, losing all my hard-earned gear. The first explosion took me by surprise as I had no idea it could do that. Imagine a regular Pop, those exploding little balls you normally find inside buildings, then make it twice as large with a blast radius big enough to melt your shields instantly. I only had one conclusion about that encounter: the Comet is terrifying. Poor old me thought I could take it down with my Anvil, but those were my famous last words.
Naturally, ARC Raiders is an extraction shooter, and every failure only emboldens me to queue up again, hoping things would change.
So I strapped myself with better weapons, including my level 3 augment, defibs in case a kind soul decided to revive me mid-run, and a Photoelectric Cloak, my trusted Raider tool that hides me from the dangers of these metallic freaks of nature.
The run was fine. Almost 10 minutes left on the clock, and I had looted every important thing I could find, from Toasters and batteries to some good old ARC Alloys. I made my way past the extraction point, only to meet the other new robot in the area: the Firefly. It couldn’t be that bad, right? So I took a few potshots at it, hoping to test its durability. Once again, famous last words.

The Firefly’s gimmick, unlike the Hornet and Wasp with their machine gun artillery and stun guns, is that it spews fire straight at your face. I should have known that was its trick, judging by its apt name. The heated encounter ended with me burned to a crisp, with no means of recovery since the Hurricane weather melted all my shields. I had no choice but to give up again, humbled by my own hubris.
Yet despite these new frustrations, I’m actually pretty happy that ARC Raiders’ latest robots are still deadly. I’ve had my fair share of encounters with the Leaper and the Queen, and those I already know how to take down. These new machines, on the other hand, feel refreshing. Annoying, sure, but they add another layer of dread to the already dangerous topside.
I know Embark has plenty more machines in the pipeline, and with the promise of making PvE more difficult from a previous developer interview, this feels like the first taste of the game steadily getting harder.
Safe to say, I had to take a break from solo runs in the meantime. Apart from the usual threat of aggressive Raiders and the punishing weather effects, the solo experience has started to feel like survival horror on my end. Granted, I just returned after a month away, so it was my own fault for trying to tilt at windmills ala Don Quixote.

But everything’s all good. With Marathon coming in just a few hours, ARC Raiders still has plenty of juice in it. While I’ll be busy exploring the ruins of Tau Ceti IV, I promised myself I’ll always come back to ARC Raiders and face whatever new monster of a machine Embark cooks up in the next update.
And I’m glad these robots are still traumatizing me four months later.
