  • Quick Answer: IO Interactive’s 007 First Light is a linear, narrative-driven James Bond origin story launching on May 27, 2026, featuring tactical combat and customizable gadgets.

IO Interactive, the team behind 007 First Light, held a live stream to answer the common questions they received from the community.

007 First Light is set to release on May 27 and has already received rave reactions from critics and content creators. The hype surrounding the game has only caused people to be more curious about what they can expect and what they get if they purchase the James Bond projects.

Here's everything we learned from their developer stream.

The Story, Character, and Lore of 007 First Light

James Bond has a 60-year legacy, with different Bonds throughout the years. Though there are different Bonds, they have their parallels. For 007 First Light, they took those similarities and combined them with a new Bond story. They knew they wanted to do a young James Bond - a 26-year-old Bond who has yet to do the MI6 and Double O missions.

007 First Light follows the journey of an unpolished Bond and his growth, and how he earns his status. As you get more attached to this new Bond, you'll see him grow into the sleek persona that the previous James Bond had. Your base of operations in the game is MI6, where you can meet other characters who grow with Bond on his journey.

Everyone in IO Interactive had a say in selecting who would play James Bond. They ultimately selected Patrick Gibson. During the stream, they stated that while other people felt like they were cosplaying Bond, Gibson felt like he was Bond. He stepped into Bond's shoes and became the character. As they worked on the game, Gibson got so into the role of Bond that he would even suggest what the character would say.

They initially didn't use his likeness for Bond, but ultimately chose to go with his features due to how well he encapsulated Bond. The other actors also praised Gibson. Since they were doing performance capture, the actors really worked together, and the chemistry on set was felt by the whole team.

An origin story allows more freedom. If they were to adapt a Bond film, they would ultimately have the story in their head. However, an origin story allows players to make their own choices without thinking of an ending. It's a clean slate. However, there are plenty of mentions and easter eggs to previous Bond media, so fans will definitely have something to look forward to!

Importantly, 007 First Light is not set in the same universe as the Hitman series.

As many people know, James Bond is British. The team has made sure that the language and culture are preserved, so you'll definitely see British things, and he'll maintain his British accent and cultural etiquette. However, this is a contemporary Bond. He has a worldwide view. He will be seen speaking different languages in the game, but will primarily speak English.

Technical Details, Editions, and Content in 007 First Light

The Legacy Edition, priced at $299.99, features a scale-model Golden Gun replica. The Golden Gun comes with a display case and secret compartment, serving as memorabilia based on the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun. There's a chance that more merchandise will come out, and the team is actively speaking to Amazon, but nothing has been confirmed as of the stream.

Currently, items in the pre-order bonus cannot be obtained later in the game. It might be available later down the line, but it's not set in stone.

An internet connection is required to download the first patch to play the game. However, after that, the main storyline can be played offline. Note that the TacSim leaderboard still requires an internet connection to play online.

Progress will not be shared across platforms, and the TacSim leaderboards are also platform-specific. In short, 007 First Light is not cross-platform. For those hoping for co-op, 007 First Light has no plans to add a multiplayer or co-op mode.

Console players will have access to both Performance and Quality modes, allowing you to select different settings for your graphics.

007 First Light will have controller support. If you're using a controller, you can experience adaptive triggers, rumble, and various gun effects. However, there is no mouse support if you plan to play on PC, and they are not considering VR support at this time.

Outfits will be available in-game. You can get them from pre-ordering the game, getting the Deluxe Edition, or unlocking certain skins through specific missions to use during the story and TacSim mode.

There will not be a demo released for 007 First Light ahead of launch.

The Gameplay Mechanics and Progression in 007 First Light

There are no multiple endings in 007 First Light. This is a linear story, and the game funnels you into the ending. While your choices shape your own roads and paths to the next stage, the ending will always remain the same.

Despite how there's only one ending, how you get to that ending is up to you. There's plenty of freedom - you can fight, bluff, or even kill to get to the ending. Do you shoot down a chandelier to distract enemies or throw a smoke? That's up to you.

Historically, Bond uses appropriate force and doesn't just kill anyone. He rationalizes the amount of force needed depending on the situation. The license to kill mechanic shows the player the appropriate time when Bond can shoot to kill. This usually happens when an enemy is trying to kill Bond and has opened fire, making the license to kill primarily for self-defense.

The bluffing system allows Bond to lie when spotted in an enemy scenario or to get into a restricted area. Bluffing works most of the time, but there are some enemies who are more aware of the situation and aren't easily fooled. These enemies are called watchers, and it is a 50/50 chance that your bluff will work if they are there.

Regarding progression, Bond's physical strength will remain the same throughout. In terms of combat, you can strike, parry, hit, drag enemies, and use the environment to attack. As you get used to playing the game, you'll get used to the different ways of fighting. However, your gadgets will progress. As you progress, you unlock more weapons and can select which weapons to bring for each mission, allowing you to build your own playstyle.

The Combat, Weapons, and Vehicles in 007 First Light

The gadgets look like everyday items that you wouldn't be suspicious of. For some items, the team was able to work with brand partners that have a legacy with Bond, such as Omega for Bond's watch. Bond's weapons have both form and function; they look good, but every aspect has a functional purpose.

The combat of 007 First Light isn't just about striking punches. You need to dodge and anticipate what your enemy will do, using the weapons in your arsenal to aid you in your fight. Winning a fight requires acute senses, and you can even throw a gun at the enemy once it runs out of bullets. There's also a mechanic called Focus, where time slows down so Bond can focus on the shot he needs to take.

Players can expect a wide array of weapons, from SMGs to shotguns. Bond will get his service pistol and will have access to other weapons further in the game. If you're in a fight and you see a shotgun next to you, you'll be able to pick it up and use it. Classic Bond gadgets will also be back, and you will encounter unique weapons that are only wielded by enemies.

You'll be able to find weapons with attachments, like silencers on pistols or various scopes. However, you won't be able to edit and find new attachments for the weapons - they come as they are.

007 First Light will, of course, feature plenty of vehicles. James Bond is known for luxury, class, and intense car chases. The team worked hard to include many different vehicles that suit the situation and terrain, while still maintaining that level of class.

James Bond will drive the Aston Martin Valhalla, and other car brands you can expect include Defender and Jaguar. However, the exact number of drivable vehicles was not revealed in the stream.

Driving segments are dependent on the story, such as the beginning of missions or car chases, meaning there is no area where you can freely drive wherever you want.

007 First Light will release on May 27, 2026, on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. A Nintendo Switch 2 release is slated for later this year.
