- Quick Answer: IO Interactive's CEO has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 port of 007 First Light is functional and running, addressing fan concerns about the delay.
If you’ve been frustrated over the lack of news surrounding the Switch 2 port of 007 First Light, you can finally relax. While the rest of the world gets to step into the tux on May 27 for PS5, Xbox, and PC, Nintendo fans were left a bit in the dark when the handheld version was pushed back to a late summer window.
People online were quick to worry that 007 First Light was headed for the same fate as Borderlands 4, the game that effectively ghosted its Switch 2 launch last year and hasn't been seen since. But IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak isn't having it.
During a sit-down with The Game Business, he took the rumors head-on, confirming that the game is already functional. "No, no, no," Abrak replied. "It’s running. It’s running on Switch."

He was pretty straight with the fans, too. The delay isn't a sign of total disaster, but a choice to avoid a subpar reputation. As Abrak put it, "We must just admit that we want to make sure that it’s as good as… I don’t want to hear ‘oh, it wasn’t a good version,’ so we just, to be completely honest, we need a bit more time to get it where we want it to be."
First Light is now aiming for a late-summer release, giving priority to performance over a rushed release date. This cautiousness probably stems from IOI’s history with Switch. If you remember the cloud version of Hitman on the first Switch, Abrak is right there with you, admitting that "the first experience we had on Switch was actually the cloud solution we did way back, which was, I think, a bit of an experiment."
Luckily, the Switch 2 is a whole different machine. With Hitman already running natively on the new console, IO is much more confident. Abrak noted that "getting Hitman out on Switch 2, natively running, has been a much better experience, both for the games and also our standard for what we want to have running on it."
IO Interactive clearly knows the stakes here. Bond and Nintendo have a massive legacy together, and Abrak isn't interested in tarnishing that history. "Bond has a special place on that platform, on Nintendo," he noted. He even promised to personally ensure the port is polished: "I promise I will do everything, and I can do quite a lot in IO’s context, being the CEO as well! I’ll do everything to get that out in great shape."
Even with the few extra months of waiting, hype for Bond is still through the roof. Early hands-on previews are calling First Light a Game of the Year contender and arguably the best Bond game to date.
If a small delay means avoiding a buggy launch, it's a trade-off most of us will gladly take. First Light is still coming to the Switch 2 later this summer, and other platforms on May 27.
