In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you're going to need a lot of bells to be able to afford all the upgrades, extensions, and furniture you want. However, there are a lot of ways to earn bells. Perhaps one of the easiest ways is by growing money trees. That's right... in New Horizons, money does grow on trees. This guide explains how!

It's hard to believe money can grow on trees, but in New Horizons it can. Growing a money tree and farming it of bells is perhaps one of the easiest ways to make money. Money trees are just like any other tree, except they will spawn bags of bells rather than fruit. To grow a money tree, you must do the following:

  • On your island, locate a spot on the ground that is glowing.
  • Dig it up and you'll find some bells!
  • Replant the bells, or more bells, in the same hole. A tree sapling will appear.
  • Wait a number of days (or time travel), for your tree to grow.
  • Once fully grown, the tree will have bells on it for you to gather.

If the tree happens to be located in an inconvenient area, you can dig up the money tree sapling and replant it elsewhere before it grows. You should also note that planting bells alone, without having dug up a glowing hole first, will not spawn a money tree.

You can have multiple money trees on your island, but each tree will only spawn bells once. After having cleared the tree of the bags of bells, it will become a normal cedar tree. It is then up to you whether you move it, chop it down for materials, or leave it as it is.

Another important thing to note when it comes to growing a money tree is exactly how many bells you plant. The amount you plant will correspond with how many bells the tree provides; whatever you plant will be multiplied by three. For example, planting 1000 bells will yield 3000 bells, and planting 5000 bells will yield 15,000 bells and so forth. You can plant up to 10,000 bells, earning yourself 30,000 bells once that tree has grown, so money trees are certainly a great way to earn some extra money.
