Sonic 2022 Will Pave the Way for A Generation of Sonic Games

Sonic 2022, which is basically Sonic Rangers even though Sega hasn’t announced it (again) yet, will be the foundation for a set of new Sonic games.

Sonic Team leader Takashi Iizuka told Sonic Stadium he wants Sonic 2022 to be the Sonic Adventure for a new generation of games, that it’s a milestone in development and isn’t just an anniversary game.

“Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way I really hope that this new title releasing in 2022 lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team,” Iizuka told Sonic Stadium.

Sonic Adventure was the series’ first fully 3D game since its debut on Sega Genesis in 1991.

While it’s doubtful we’ll see a similarly major presentation leap -- Sonic VR, for example -- Sonic Adventures innovated in more than just visuals.

Sonic Adventure added new playable characters, NPCs, quests, and more, including the fan-favorite Chao Garden mini-game.

Iizuka couldn’t share any more with Sonic Stadium, but if Adventure is Sonic Team’s guiding light, then it seems possible they plan on overhauling the core of the Sonic experience once again.

Considering the blue blur’s more recent outings have met with less than positive reception for one reason or another, it seems evident Sonic is in need of a refresh.
