Phasmophobia is primarily a multiplayer game that sees you and your teammates take on the roles of paranormal investigators. While hunting for ghosts and collecting evidence of their existence, you'll be bound to encounter a few other items too. If you're not already a seasoned Phasmophobia player, then these items may be confusing at first. That's where we step in!

In this guide, we've explained the two types of keys that can be found during a contract, what they're intended for and how you can use them.

What Keys Are There

During your time as a paranormal investigator, you'll come across two types of keys in Phasmophobia. The first is the Main Door Key, which can be found in the van where all of your equipment is kept. This key will unlock the buildings main door or side doors, granting you access to it or an additional entrance or exit point.

The second key available is the Car Key. As you'll be well aware after just a short amount of time hunting for ghosts, they love to cause chaos. With that in mind, the Car Key is used to turn off any car alarms that these pesky ghosts may occasionally choose to set off.

The Main Door Key will be found on all maps, but the Car Key will only be found on the following maps:

  • Edgefield Street House
  • Tanglewood Street House
  • Willow Street House
  • Ridgeview Road House

This key will typically be located where you'd expect to find a car key in real life. In a small dish on a bedside table, on some drawers in the hallway, or on a kitchen side.

How to Use Keys

Once one player collects a key, all players will have access to that respective key. To use the Main Door Key, you simply need to left-click on the locked door and it'll open!

As for the Car Key, you must approach the car and left-click again. The car alarm will turn off and the key will beep twice provided you've turned the alarm off successfully.

Arguably, the keys serve little purpose and merely act as a nice feature within Phasmophobia. Yet, it's nice to be aware of when you should be looking for a Car Key so you can get that car alarm turned off as soon as possible should your ghost be looking to cause a scene!

There are a couple of other items in Phasmophobia that have a purpose that doesn't seem so obvious initially, such as Bone Evidence and the Crucifix. We recommend taking a look at those to ensure you're making the most of your time tracking down ghosts!
