Single-Player Star Wars Outlaws continues Ubisoft’s infuriating “editions” structure

Remember when you used to just buy a game and get everything? Well, Ubisoft’s upcoming single-player adventure game Star Wars Outlaws continues the mega-publisher’s trend of splitting its games into multiple editions to squeeze every last penny out of gamers.

In a new story trailer for the adventure game, Ubisoft confirmed the recently leaked Star Wars Outlaws release date. Leaked earlier on Tuesday by Ubisoft Japan, Star Wars Outlaws releases on Xbox Series, PS5 and PC on August 30, 2024. The game will also include multiple PC-only visual features that will bring your computer to its knees.

Alongside the release date, Ubisoft confirmed multiple editions of Star Wars Outlaws that locks additional content away unless you pay more. The sprawling RPG will, of course, feature a Star Destroyer-full amount of content, but those who pay extra will get access to DLC, launch-day cosmetics and - gaming’s most annoying recent trend - early access to the game.

On August 30, 2024, Standard Edition customers will get access to the base game. However, those who buy the Gold Edition and the Ultimate Edition will be able to play the new Star Wars game three days early on August 27, 2024. The Gold and Ultimate Editions also include the Season Pass which includes a launch day exclusive mission Jabba’s Gambit and the Kessel Runner Character Pass. The Ultimate Edition also includes the Sabacc Shark Bundle, Rogue Infiltrator Bundle and a Digital Art Book.

Outside of the infuriating editions split that Ubisoft is keen to continue pursuing with every game it releases, Star Wars Outlaws looks phenomenal. As a GTA-like adventure in space with on-foot and space travel freedom, this could be everything Star Wars fans have been craving. After all, who doesn’t want to play a Star Wars heist adventure? (Solo Kessel Run, anyone?)

Following EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Outlaws looks to be continuing the trend of video games holding some of the best modern Star Wars stories. After the travesties that were Rise of Skywalker, Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, it’s actually not all that surprising.
