Minecraft Legends is going the way of the dodo as publisher Mojang ends development on the casual RTS game. After just nine months, the Minecraft spin-off will no longer receive new content or patches on any platform.

In our Minecraft Legends review last year, we didn’t quite vibe with the stripped back nature of the series’ RTS spin-off. While the game was good, it wasn’t really anything special.

“Minecraft Legends is certainly worth a try if you're subscribed to Game Pass already,” our review reads. “But, like Minecraft Dungeons, this one truly is for the franchise fans out there.”

In a Minecraft blog post, Mojang revealed that the game will be retired after its next major update. “We’re now going to take a step back from development,” they revealed. “Thank you for following along this heroic journey and helping us make Minecraft Legends the game it is today.”

Minecraft Legends ends following the release of its Snow vs. Snouts update, a new Lost Legends quest that focuses on long-range combat where players can’t directly control mobs or build structures. However, the mission revolves around an enhanced Redstone Launcher, and completing the quest unlocks a Snow Guardian skin for players to don.

The final Minecraft Legends update also includes new mobs including the fearless frog, creepy witches, clangers, and air choppers. The game’s final patch also includes enhanced pathfinding for enemy and friendly units as well as an overhauled Battle View UI to make battles easier to track.

While Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends may not be as successful as many would expect from a Minecraft spin-off, Mojang isn’t giving up on branching the franchise into more genres.

In the blog post, the developer explained that more Minecraft spin-off games are being looked at, teasing that some may even be in the works at the time of writing.

“With the support of our team, our partners, and the Minecraft community, we're going to continue exploring the types of games we're passionate about and bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe,” the blog post reads.

Minecraft Legends and Minecraft Dungeons are currently available to play on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC right now. Both games are also available on Xbox Game Pass.
