When a ransomware group announced that they hacked Epic Games, many were worried about what would happen, especially after Insomniac Games went through the same thing. However, it turns out that what happened to Epic might have been a hoax, as the group who supposedly did it is now claiming they’re trying to scam hackers.
According to Cyber Daily (via VGC), ransomware group Mogilevich has said that their actions were a hoax to try and one-up other scammers. The group claims that they were trying to sell their fake ransomware to other criminal hackers as some form of karmic justice.
“Now the real question is, why confess all this when we could just run away?” group member Pongo asked in a statement. “This was done to illustrate the process of our scam. We don’t think of ourselves as hackers but rather as criminal geniuses, if you can call us that.”
That might sound noble to some but Cyber Daily does say this could also be a ruse, so no one should drop their guard just yet. Epic Games did tell VGC that there was seemingly no sign of an attack, but things can change. Needless to say, these devs should heighten security and make sure everything is still there, just in case.
Hacks like these are no joke, as the private information of various people can end up in malicious hands. While these leaks can lead to some fun news, like the information that was surrounding the Wolverine game, anything that might hurt the employees shouldn’t be shared. Let’s just hope that this is a hoax, for the sake of anyone working for Epic Games.

Data from Epic Games would go for a pretty penny, as the company has been incredibly financial in recent years.
