February 28, 2024: According to VGC, Epic Games has revealed there is "zero evidence" surrounding the alleged hack.

A ransomware gang has claimed that they have hacked Fortnite developer Epic Games, auctioning off data for a still unnamed price. This is the second major hack to hit the industry in recent months, the first of which impacted PlayStation studio Insomniac Games in a major way.

Cyber Daily (via VGC) reports that the ransomware gang going by Mogilevich is responsible for this breach in security, with the group saying they “quietly” attacked Epic’s servers. Mogilevich claims to have stolen nearly 200GB worth of data, including “email, passwords, full name, payment information, source code and many other data.”

The ransomware gang will be selling Epic Games’ data until March 4, though they are being pretty vague about things. No price has been given for the data they’re selling and the gang didn’t reveal what they will do if the data isn’t bought by that time. If it’s anything like the Insomniac leak, there could be a ton of data released on the net that jeopardizes people’s safety.

When the Insomniac Games leak happened, details on the upcoming Wolverine game were revealed, alongside plans for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and beyond. Of course, we don’t know if every little detail from those leaks will be happening, as ideas like the Spider-Man 2 multiplayer were scrapped long before the game was released. Still, video game info is far from the worst thing that can be leaked, since people’s private data might end up in the wrong hands.

Epic Games has yet to respond about the attack and Mogilevich hasn’t posted any proof of them stealing the company’s data. However, that could change in the next few days and weeks, as anything could be shown to get the company’s attention. Only time will tell if things get any better or worse, but Epic should prioritize keeping their employees safe from whatever gets leaked.

Fortnite is the battle royale Epic Games is most known for and if they’re lucky, only game details will be leaked. Let’s hope that any personal data gets retrieved before things get worse.
