The Insomniac leak revealed a ton of details about the company’s games, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 potentially getting an online mode. However, recent stories have pointed out how some of the information in that leak is dated, with the online mode canceled ‘a long time ago.’

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, pitches were made for a Spider-Man multiplayer game but they didn’t come to fruition. While we’re sure some gameplay and concepts were developed for this ambitious project, the report clarifies that this is dated information on something that was canceled.

“But many of the documents that have spread online thanks to the leak were old and may no longer be accurate, such as pitches for a multiplayer Spider-Man game that was canceled a long time ago, according to people familiar with the company’s plans,” Schreier said in the article.

Considering how ambitious a Spider-Man 2 multiplayer game is, the cancelation is disappointing without being a major surprise to anyone. Having to manage multiple players swinging around a large open world would be costly and require a ton of attention, hence, Insomniac working on other titles like Marvel’s Wolverine.

With Spider-Verse becoming a huge property after the animated Sony films, one would think that a multiplayer game using that IP would be more appropriate. Anything can happen in the world of video games, but it looks like fans will have to keep waiting for a huge online Spider-Man project.

In the meantime, fans don’t mind the character staying in the realm of single-player games, especially if they lead to excellent titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The open-world superhero title ended up becoming Insomniac’s highest-rated video game, which is saying a lot, given the company’s Ratchet & Clank titles.

Fans can check out Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 right now on PlayStation 5, with a PC port seemingly coming soon, if the leaks are anything to go by. The leaks also claim that free DLC is underway, following the success of God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC.
