Mario Kart 8 Is Now The Best-Selling Racing Game In U.S. History

Between Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo's famous racing franchise has seen strong support in recent years, but Mario Kart 8 is still performing admirably.

First released in 2014 on Nintendo's ill-fated Wii U console, a "Deluxe" port quickly followed the Switch's launch in 2017. Seven years later, Mario Kart 8 remains a top seller and between them, it's now sold 41.86 million sales, becoming the United States of America's best-selling racing game.

Mario Kart 8 Is Now The Best-Selling Racing Game In U.S. History

This announcement comes from The NPD Group, an organization who track video game sales data in the U.S., with executive director Mat Piscatella breaking this news on Twitter.

As the Wii U's best-selling game, Mario Kart 8 sold 8.45 million sales, an impressive feat considering the Wii U itself sold 13.56 million. Back in December 2020, Nintendo announced Deluxe had pushed 33.41 million copies alone, and the combined figure broke Mario Kart Wii's lifetime sales.

Despite fan demand, there's been no word on Mario Kart 9 just yet but, considering 8's still pulling in the sales, Nintendo don't seem to be in a hurry.
