As you make your way through the new kart racer, you'll definitely want to unlock characters in Disney Speedstorm. With so many iconic characters in the roster, everyone will have a favourite to try and equip.
In this guide, we'll explain how you unlock characters in Disney Speedstorm. It's not the most straightforward process, and has some freemium payment models locking some characters away, so strap in to learn more.
How do I unlock characters in Disney Speedstorm?
Unlocking characters in Disney Speedstorm requires you to collect the required quantity of Shards for each character. Generally speaking, you need 10 Shards per character to add them to your roster and race with them.
This doesn't apply to all characters, however. Mickey Mouse is unlocked by default when you start the game, and you'll unlock characters like Donald Duck and Goofy by playing the tutorial. On top of that, if you've purchased the Founder's Pack you'll get to pick an extra character as a bonus.

Generally though, you'll need to slowly but surely collect enough Shards to unlock your favourite character. You can't buy Shards outright, but rather you'll need to get them via Universal Boxes and other random loot boxes in the Store. It means you'll have to fork out your hard-earned currency, but it's the only way to earn Shards.
Other boxes that contain Shards are Season Boxes and Special Boxes, and you can also get them from some Golden Pass tiers as a reward.
Once you have enough Shards for the character you're saving up for, head to the Collections tab and scroll to them. Then you can spend those Shards to unlock the base Level 1 version of that racer, which can then be upgraded with more Shards down the line. Therefore, you've always got a reason to be collecting new currencies!
