July 10, 2023: With Season 1 officially revealed, read up on how to swap weapons in Diablo 4.

Here's how to swap weapons in Diablo 4 and how to assign each one to the skill you want to use. The Diablo 4 Barbarian class relies on weapons more than the other classes in the game. With powerful abilities requiring specific weapon types, you won't reach your apex by scouting out just one.

Each Diablo 4 class defeats demons with the help of different powers. While some rely on magic or stealth, the brutish Barbarian prefers good old-fashioned iron and steel to figuratively fight tooth and nail. But they're only as good as their equipment. And that's down to you.

How to swap Barbarian weapons in Diablo 4? (Season 1)

Brawling in Diablo 4 sits somewhere between the systems of Diablo 2 and Diablo 3. The former lets you quickly switch between two different weapons in battle, whereas the latter didn't.

In Diablo 4, you automatically swap to the weapon type required by the skill you use, locking you out of that power if you happen to accidentally sell or salvage the only viable option in your inventory.

This means certain builds require more than one top-tier weapon to thrive. You can make things work with a generic armament, but this Gilgamesh approach to fighting opens up some truly terrifying combinations.

What weapons can Barbarians use in Diablo 4?

Diablo 4 Barbarians use the next weapons:

  • Two One-Handed Weapons (clubs, axes, swords, etc.)
  • A Two-Handed Bludgeoning Weapon (clubs etc.)
  • A Two-Handed Slashing Weapon (swords, axes, polearms, etc.)

Certain skills require specific weapon types, with your Barbarian automatically switching to the best weapon of that type in your inventory when you use the skill. If you don't have a viable weapon on hand, you won't be able to use the skill.

How to set weapons to weapon skills in Diablo 4

Because certain skills require certain weapon types in Diablo 4, your character will automatically equip what the game decides is the best weapon for the job whenever you use one of these skills.

If you don't trust the system or want it to stick with weapons from a particular set, you can manually assign which weapons your character will use for these skills. Here's how.

  • Open the menu with skills.
  • Choose the one you want to use.
  • Click on the Skills Assignment button.
  • In the menu that pops up, click on the Cycle Weapons button.
  • You will be able to scroll all of the equipped weapons. Just choose any of them and confirm it.
  • After that, the weapon will be assigned to this skill and your Barbarian will pull it out whenever you activate the ability.

This new mechanic makes the Barbarian’s gameplay more diverse and allows you to create new builds. Looking for more content like this? Feel free to read our Diablo 4 Butcher guide. Know your enemy.
