The original Star Wars: Dark Forces is perhaps most notable for being the Star Wars franchise's first venture into FPS video games. The remaster will see fans old and new experience the story of Kyle Katarn: the mercenary-turned-rebel who takes on the Empire to put an end to their Dark Trooper initiative.

Fans of other classic Star Wars games may recognize Kyle Katarn from titles such as the Star Wars Jedi Knight series. The character himself now exists outside of the Star Wars canon following Disney's acquisition of Star Wars. Now, Katarn makes up part of Star Wars Legends, existing only in the series' Expanded Universe.

Nightdive Studios has been no stranger to resurrecting classic games in recent times. The studio's recent success with the remaster of the classic System Shock bodes well for the prospects of success for Dark Forces Remaster. Alongside the release of Dark Forces, 2024 will see Nightdive remaster System Shock 2. A remastered Turok 3 is also currently in the works at Nightdive.
