It seems dropping the FIFA license was a risk worth taking, as EA Sports FC 24 has been a huge success for the publisher. Both console and mobile iterations of the game are flourishing, showing that this might be 2023’s hottest new IP, at least in terms of player base.
EA released a press release (via GamesIndustry.biz), touting how the game managed to reach incredible player numbers within a week of its launch. The player base has reportedly reached 11.3 million globally, showing that EA is doing just fine without FIFA.
As if the console game’s success wasn’t big enough, mobile spin-off EA Sports FC was able to hit 11.2 million players after 10 days. The mobile app was also downloaded by 2.2 million users at launch, showing plenty of interest in this relatively new sports IP.
"In addition to welcoming back millions of our longtime players, new players in FC 24 are up nearly 20% year over year, showing the excitement of football fans everywhere to join the Club," EA Sports president Cam Weber said. "We are building the world's biggest football community through EA Sports FC, and we're just getting started."
With EA de-listing all of their FIFA games, football fans don’t really have a choice but to pick this one up. Obviously, the player number shows that players are fine with this new IP, so expect yearly installments from here on out. Should FIFA make a comeback with a new developer, the wars between both titles will be really interesting.
For years, EA was labeled as one of the most evil gaming companies around, but it seems that the publisher has made a small comeback. Single-player titles like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and the Dead Space remake have been a major success. Apex Legends is also still big for the publisher.
