Will Borderlands 4’s Supposed Difficulty Challenges Help or Hurt the Looter Shooter?

Borderlands 4 might be another looter shooter RPG in this series, but it is trying some new things out to make the formula feel fresher. The game will have plenty of movement options, which is welcoming, and will also lessen some of that meme-like humor. Interestingly, one of these changes is going to be the game’s difficulty, promising to be harder than previous entries.

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford is actually worried about this, telling Insider Gaming the amount of difficulty makes him “a little nervous.” While we wouldn’t call these games “easy” per se, they aren’t usually shooters that will test your mettle or make you work too hard. If this direction is anything to go by, it will be interesting to see how people react to the challenge when it comes out.

BorderSouls?

Naturally, the first joke many fans are going to make is “Will Borderlands 4 be like Dark Souls?” which we don’t think is the case. First-person shooter games can be difficult without being compared to the oversaturated Soulslike genre, often relying on movement and large numbers of enemies to overwhelm the player.

Granted, that same strategy is also used for the Soulslike genre, but hear me out.

We imagine that the focus on your Vault Hunter’s movement options and sheer amount of weapons will mean more enemies for players to shoot. This could be similar to id Software’s DOOM, which manages to be a difficult shooter via arcade-like waves of enemies. Gearbox’s shooter can do something similar here with RPG elements, which would make it stand out from similar titles.

Think Before You Shoot

Honestly, Borderlands 4 can find its own way of being difficult without trying to be DOOM or a Soulslike. No matter what’s done here, it looks like this fourth game will have players thinking before they shoot a swarm of enemies. Pitchford also hinted that the enemy bosses could pose a threat more than usual, which should give solo players something to think about.

If this game is as difficult as Pitchford is making it out to be, fans will be interested to see how co-op is affected by that. Borderlands is known for having expansive worlds to explore and loot to gather, so trying to make that harder is interesting, to say the least. Either way, making these players think with their friends is going to lead to many amusing scenarios, which will likely be streamed online.

Depending on how all of these new features are handled, Borderlands 4 could be the best entry in this series or an overly ambitious low point. Trying new things is better than being stale, so we’re interested in seeing the reactions to Gearbox’s anticipated looter shooter.
