When I first saw Borderlands 4, there was this feeling of apathy that took hold, as it looked like another game in this series, but prettier. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford didn’t help things, as he tried to guilt fans into buying this game if it got priced at $80. For the most part, this writer didn’t see a reason to pick up this new entry.
Most fans were won over with this fourth entry when 2K Games announced that there would be a billion weapons added to it. That’s cool and all, but these games have always had plenty of cool weapons, so being excited about more of them didn’t exactly fill me with glee.
Then I saw the enhanced movement options added to the game. And now I’m very interested in this shooter.
In an interview with the Epic Games Store, Randy Pitchford revealed that there would be double jumping added to Borderlands 4. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, there are also air dashes, gliding, and grappling hooks that will make traversal in this game even more fun. Fans were already content with basic movement options, but these traversal mechanics add a whole new layer of excitement.
As someone who likes it when video games break reality, seeing these traversal options filled me with all sorts of excitement. Unique movement options are why games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Batman: Arkham City, and the Infamous duology have a place in my heart. Traversal is also why Kingdom Hearts 3 is my favorite entry in the series (fight me), so seeing similar mechanics added to a new Borderlands entry immediately has my attention.
Of course, there are still some things that prevent me from completely liking the potential of Borderlands 4. Even though $70 has been normalized in the modern gaming landscape, I’m still not the biggest fan of that and try to wait for sales. Adding to that is how the Borderlands series goes on sale regularly, so it won’t take too long for this fourth entry to get cheaper.
However, even I can’t deny that extra movement options have made me rethink my approach to getting this game. Even though the first-person perspective doesn’t appeal to me too much, games like DOOM 2016 have opened my eyes concerning the genre. Giving me the option to double jump, air dash, and use a grappling hook makes this first-person game even more interesting.

I don’t know if Borderlands 4 is worth picking up, even with these awesome traversal options in the base game. At the very least, it will be on my wishlist, so that’s one point for Randy Pitchford.
