  • Quick Answer: You do not need prior James Bond knowledge to enjoy 007 First Light; it is an accessible, standalone origin story focused on sandbox gameplay.

As a James Bond game, it's no surprise that 007 First Light heavily references the movies and the books.

For those who've watched every Bond movie (or maybe even read the original novels by Ian Fleming), this is great, considering there's a bunch of easter eggs and references in the game. But what if you're like me - someone who has barely consumed any form of Bond media in the past?

Let's discuss whether the game can still be enjoyed if you're new to the world of 007!

Why I Was Unsure About 007 First Light

One of the biggest concerns I had when deciding to purchase 007 First Light was whether I needed to have major James Bond knowledge.

The first James Bond film I ever watched was Skyfall in 2012 - and I was only 12 years old then, so my memory of it is hazy. Daniel Craig was the first Bond I ever knew. I never decided to watch the previous Bond movies, and I didn't even play the other James Bond video games.

I knew that 007 First Light would be filled with plenty of James Bond references. What I was mostly concerned about was whether I would need sufficient knowledge for the gameplay, and if I would feel left out if something was said that I didn't understand. I didn't want to feel like an outsider after spending $69.99.

And yet I couldn't help but be interested. What stood out to me was how 007 First Light has a linear story, but each mission is set in a sandbox-like area that allows you to make your own choices. There are challenges you need to overcome, but how you do it is entirely up to you.

You can be as stealthy or as violent as you want. The unique gameplay (plus Patrick Gibson as Bond) meant it was eventually added to my Steam Cart.

Not a James Bond Fan? Get 007 First Light Anyway

Even with my minimal (almost non-existent) James Bond knowledge, I got 007 First Light. And guess what? I enjoyed it anyway.

There were definitely Bond references I didn't get the first time, and I found myself researching easter eggs to understand them. Despite that, the actual combat and story don't require any prior Bond knowledge at all. 007 First Light acts as an origin story and a soft reboot of the Bond persona as a whole. With no direct ties to the books or existing movies, it's perfect for people who are new to the 007 franchise.

Instead of focusing on past Bond media, the gameplay relies on stealth, gadgets, puzzle-solving, bluffing, and more. Of course, OG fans will love references found in Legacy items and the Q-Branch gadgets, but I didn't feel like I was clueless while playing.

So, do you need to know James Bond well in order to play 007 First Light? No. In fact, this game might introduce you to your favorite Bond: the rookie 26-year-old spy who is a little clumsy, a little reckless, and trying to earn his Double-O status.
