  • Key Update: Independent retailers Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming have announced they will not sell GTA 6 because its physical edition contains a digital code instead of a disc.
  • Status: Confirmed
  • Last Verified: June 25, 2026
  • Quick Answer: Multiple video game stores are refusing to stock GTA 6 because its physical release only includes a digital download code rather than a real disc.

When Rockstar Games confirmed the physical versions of GTA 6 wouldn't include a disc, the news immediately went viral and understandably split opinion.

The physical version of GTA 6 doesn't come with an actual disc. Instead, you'll receive a box with a digital code, and you'll need to redeem that code on your console to get the game. It wasn't long before people took to social media to complain about the use of codes rather than a physical item - after all, it's supposed to be a physical edition.

Following the announcement, some retailers have revealed they won't sell GTA 6 due to the absence of discs. Here's everything we know about the situation.

Retailers Refuse to Sell GTA 6 Over Discless Physical Versions

Following the news that GTA 6's physical copies won't have a disc, some retailers have opted not to sell the game in protest.

In their statement, Video Games Plus informed their customers, "For nearly 40 years, VGP has been committed to supporting physical media and preserving the value of physical game ownership. As part of that commitment, our company policy is that we do not carry physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code."

Due to their current company policy, they are choosing not to sell the latest GTA installment. Though they know that this game will likely signal the biggest launch in gaming history, they are choosing to stick with their beliefs. However, they commented that if Rockstar were to ever release a disc version, then they would be open to stocking it.

Loot Box Gaming offered a similar sentiment, stating, "When we started LBG, it was out of a love for our favorite form of media, gaming, as well as the preservation of said media. If a product can’t honor the people who pay their hard-earned money to purchase it, then we have no business trying to sell it to our customers, whom we value above anything else."

When Rockstar announced that the physical versions of the game wouldn't include a disc, players were understandably disappointed. After all, the beauty of a physical version is the disc - the fact that you have an item you can tangibly hold, touch, and share.

With the internet upset over the lack of an actual physical product, despite calling it a physical version, other retailers may be considering boycotting GTA 6, too.
