  • Quick Answer: An analysis the GTA 6 teaser, comparing it to previous Grand Theft Auto game reveals and discussing what makes it fall short.

It’s hard to believe Grand Theft Auto 6 is just a few months away, barring any potential delays. I’m old enough to remember quite a few pre-release cycles, particularly the last two, and let me tell you: GTA 6 sorely lacks an iconic first teaser like 4 and 5 had.

The year was 2007, and Rockstar decided to bless fans with an eerie first look at what we eventually came to baptize as the GTA HD era. It was glorious, back to Liberty City, yet it was a far cry from what we could experience in 2001. I still remember going almost frame by frame, trying to catch every little tidbit of information I could — who was the narrator? What boroughs would we be able to visit? Were there any references to previous games in the series?

That excitement was fueled by a teaser that was short, sweet, and full of enigma. It had a proper somber tone that, as we came to find out, was perfectly fitting for the American Dream-turned-sour storyline that followed Niko Bellic. It showed is that signature Rockstar rendition of landmarks with a satirical twist: the MetLife building turned into a GetALife, Star Junction (their version of Times Square) filled to the brim with tongue-in-cheek ads, and a look at the Statue of Happiness, home to the coolest easter egg in the entire game, the heart of Liberty City.

It was a slow cook, too. Letting you savor each frame and attention to detail that became the vein of Rockstar’s existence, leading to ridiculous development cycles. But back then, the novelty was so impressive, even reviews eventually praised the fact that Niko walked down stairs in a realistic manner.

A little more than three years following the release of GTA 4, we got our first glimpse at the glitz and glamour of Los Santos in full HD glory. Once again, a mysterious voice-over opened the door for speculation. Maybe you’re too young to remember, but a long 15 years ago, when the first GTA 5 teaser debuted, fan theories went haywire once players spotted an older, tough-looking gentleman who resembled an older Tommy Vercetti.

It was a tonal whiplash from our first look at Liberty City. It was bigger, more bombastic, and over-the-top, featuring the giant Vinewood (Hollywood) logo, crazy heists, and police chases. Our narrator, whom we eventually learned was Michael De Santa, talked about having a fresh start and leaving his past behind to become a family man. It was no longer a story about a man with trauma chasing an American dream, but rather one that had seemingly achieved it only for the ghosts of his past to return, one being in the form of long-time associate Trevor Philips.

The teaser captured the right mix of enticing players with its sense of scale and wonder, showcasing massive countryside and busy streets, all while promising another incredible overarching story.

GTA 6’s first teaser, which premiered almost three years ago back in December 2023, lacks all of that. There’s no denying it looks gorgeous, and it hits all the notes you’d expect from Rockstar’s almost trademarked slapstick satire. But the Bonnie and Clyde themes from the dual protagonists just aren’t hitting the right notes for me.

Despite following a similar structure to previous ones, particularly GTA 5’s, to me, it just lacks that extra spark. Could it be the first hint at the lack of Dan Houser as part of the writing team? It might be exaggerating, but thinking about it is already making me feel uneasy about the story’s quality.
