  • Quick Answer: Prominent Destiny 2 content creator Aztecross has stated he will not support Bungie's upcoming game Marathon, highlighting community disappointment.

The Destiny 2 community is up in arms, and one of its biggest content creators, Aztecross, has bowed to not support Marathon or take on any Sony sponsor opportunities after it was confirmed that Bungie was putting an end to any future updates for the looter shooter.

Via a YouTube video, Cross explained that "objectively, Destiny is a better game" than Marathon, adding that while he has enjoyed the game and played for a serious amount of hours since its release, it will never fill the void of Bungie's previous titles.

"We don't want to play Marathon. Not to the extent that we played Destiny. I don't want to play Marathon," he stated. He had even harsher words, a bit in jest mixed in with some real feelings, but the bottom line was: Aztecross has essentially bowed to never support Marathon if it means leadership gets to receive the message that the player base clamors for more Destiny, not underperforming extraction shooters.

Aztecross taking such a stance could have serious implications for Marathon. The game really needs all the players and good PR it can get. For Cross, who currently has over 1 million YouTube subscribers, 668k followers on Twitch, and regularly amassed thousands of viewers when a new Destiny 2 season, raid, or DLC dropped, to come out and make such a strong declaration of intent, it could sway a big chunk of Marathon's current players and turn them against the extraction shooter, dwindling the already disappointing numbers.

The sentiment of abandonment and disappointment in the Destiny community can't be understated. For years, players blamed Activision for some of Bungie's more anti-consumer tactics implemented over the last few seasons: vaulting content, overpriced season passes, demanding more money for less content, and yet they stood by the game.

Even when Bungie finally went independent, and the content drought became even more egregious, fans stood up for the developer.

As an avid player myself, it's sad it has come to an end in such a way. Destiny 2 should have ended with The Final Shape, and development should have shifted to Destiny 3. Bungie's stubbornness ended up killing a franchise beloved by thousands, one that I hope they can bring back.
