  • Quick Answer: Destiny 2's live-service content will officially end on June 9, 2026, as Bungie shifts focus to new projects.

It finally happened, Bungie has confirmed they will cease any further expansions or content drops for Destiny 2. After a long nine-year run, the game will officially sunset on June 9.

Originally released in 2017, Destiny 2 was a historic moment for the company. While veterans were angry, it stripped a lot of the improvements the studio had made throughout the years, basically resetting everything. Bungie stuck by the title, with years upon years of expansions. Some lukewarm, others outright bad, and a bunch more are being extremely well received. To say it's been a wild ride would be an understatement.

Via a blog post, Bungie stated: "As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio."

What could that next project be? It's Destiny 3. It has to be. Sony didn't fork out almost $4 billion just so Bungie could move past one of the most iconic shooters in the entire industry. Let alone one with insane monetization, almost too much at times.

It was clear that Bungie's original plan was to keep Destiny 2 going, even if a majority of the fanbase clamored for a refresh with a brand-new number on the cover. Following The Final Shape, which was a perfect sendoff for the franchise in 2024, Bungie switched to smaller content drops to continue pushing the story forward. The project remained somewhat ambitious in scope, with players finally getting to explore outside the Solar System, execution wise it felt like Marathon was eating up resources internally, with these new mini-expansions feeling incredibly disappointing from a gameplay perspective.

Whatever happens to Destiny as a franchise, all I can say is it's been a good ride, but it was time to put it to rest. It's sad it didn't go out on a high, the way it should've, but memories will remain, and hopefully Bungie brings it back stronger than ever.
