If you’ve been playing Monster Hunter Wilds today, you might have noticed other hunters swinging around a simple Pickaxe as a weapon. This isn’t a mod or a glitch. It’s part of a brand-new event quest that lets you use these humble workshop tools in actual hunts, and the event just went live.

Here’s how to get the Mining Pickaxe weapons for Longsword and Sword & Shield in Monster Hunter Wilds:

Do the “Hungry for Ore?” Event Quest to Acquire Worn Pickaxe

Hungry for ore?

To craft the Mining Pickaxe weapons for your Longsword and Sword & Shield, take on the quest “Hungry for Ore?” from your handler, Alma or Erik. The event quest requires you to slay two 8-Star Gravios. It’s not the toughest fight, but it can be frustrating thanks to Gravios’ rock-hard carapace and constant fire laser attacks. If one Gravios was already a hassle, now you’ll have to deal with two of them in Wounded Hollow.

The strategy is simple: make sure to use the Fence every time it’s available. This separates the Gravios so you can focus on one at a time. It’s also best to jump into SOS Quests or Lobby Quests with other players to clear it faster, since the quest usually rewards just one Worn Pickaxe per completion.

Pickaxe weapon!

After collecting enough Worn Pickaxe items from the event quest, you can forge either weapon depending on your preference. Sword and Shield mains can get the Mining Pickaxe, featuring a Pickaxe as a sword paired with a crystal shield. Longsword mains, on the other hand, get to wield a massive Pickaxe with plenty of flair.

Both weapons share the skill “Power Stone,” which temporarily boosts your attack power after mining from an Ore deposit. It’s a funny and gimmicky skill, but perfect for casual hunts with friends when you want to add a bit of challenge.

These weapons aren’t suited for 9-Star endgame hunts against monsters like Gore Magala or Arkveld, but they work just fine in lower ranks if you’re helping new players ease into Wilds.

Make It a Layered Weapon!

Make it layered!

Just like the Gunlance Cornpopper, one of the best things about this addition is that it can be turned into a Layered Weapon. That way, other hunters will be baffled when you show up to a Lagiacrus hunt with a Pickaxe in hand. Simply craft both weapon iterations, and you’ll be able to equip them as Layered Weapons from your tent.

And that’s about it. Don’t expect new monsters or overpowered weapons just yet. Monster Hunter Wilds’ next big addition will be the crossover with Final Fantasy XIV later this September, featuring the Omega Planetes monster as a new hunt.
