How Do You Continue Metal Gear After Guns of the Patriots?

Old Snake and Eva

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has done a great job of reviving interest in Konami’s acclaimed stealth series, as it’s the “first” story chronologically. This game already has fans wondering about future remakes and collections, with some still waiting for Master Collection Vol. 2. But when it comes to the series’ future, we’re wondering if there is anywhere left to go.

Spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots beyond this point.

There have been talks of a Metal Gear Solid 6 for years now, though many thought that it wouldn’t be possible. After all, Hideo Kojima is now doing his own thing with Death Stranding, and there isn’t a lot of material to continue from after MGS4. Regardless, it’s clear that Konami wants to continue this series, so that’s going to be an interesting hurdle to overcome.

No More Stories to Tell?

For all intents and purposes, Metal Gear Solid 4 was the series’ finale, essentially wrapping up any stories for the modern version of Snake. It might have been a convoluted story with way too many cutscenes for a video game, but this was still an ambitious epic for many. Most fans will agree that there are no other plot points to bring up, now that Snake is dying, The Patriots are finished, and all the characters have gotten their happily ever after.

Raiden could be used for more games, but that character is nowhere near as iconic as Snake or Big Boss. He did star in the excellent Revengeance spinoff game from PlatinumGames, but that wasn’t what anyone would call a “Metal Gear” title. It did let fans play as Raiden in all of his cyborg ninja glory, and that’s far from a bad thing.

There’s a reason why Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain was set in the past again, because there’s nowhere to go in the present.

Remake Everything?

If Metal Gear Solid Delta is anything to go by, there’s a very good chance that Konami will just remake the other games in order to “revive” this series. Doing so without Kojima is an odd move, but that’s just something fans will have to suck up if they want to play more of these games. We’re sure a remake of the first Metal Gear Solid would sell millions of copies, and it’s surprising they chose to start with Snake Eater.

Then again, if they’re starting from the beginning chronologically, this makes sense. But does that mean they’re going to remake Peace Walker to continue the story? Maybe even remake those MSX2 and NES games with modern visuals? If any games need a remake, it’s those older Metal Gear titles.

Konami has been on a revival binge lately, bringing back Silent Hill, Suikoden, and Castlevania. We won’t mind if that streak continues with Metal Gear, but what will they do after there isn’t anything to remake? That’s something we’re all going to ponder for many years.
