Could Konami Be Planning Metal Gear Solid 6 After Snake Eater Delta?

MGS 3 DELTA

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Delta is set to release on August 28, and while many fans are excited to relive the “Virtuous Mission” once again, for some modern players, this will be their first major Metal Gear Solid experience. With Vol. 1 of the Metal Gear Solid Collection already out and Vol. 2 reportedly on the way, there are no other Metal Gear Solid titles currently confirmed. That is, unless Konami decides to take on something incredibly ambitious: Metal Gear Solid 6.

How could that even be possible? Let’s speculate.

A Metal Gear Without Kojima?

Stealth in Delta Snake Eater.

The first question we need to ask is whether a new Metal Gear Solid game would truly feel like Metal Gear without Hideo Kojima. There is no denying that his artistic flair and eerily prophetic writing shaped the series into what it is today. Without his signature style, many players might struggle to feel the same excitement for a new Metal Gear Solid entry. After all, we have already seen Konami attempt a Metal Gear title without him, and the result did not inspire much confidence.

Yet there is a small glimmer of hope. Konami has been going through what some would call a redemption arc in recent years, particularly after reviving the long-dormant Silent Hill franchise for modern audiences. Silent Hill 2 Remake’s success proved that the company’s gaming division still has life, beyond its Pachinko machines.

A few years ago, making a new Metal Gear Solid would have seemed like a disastrous idea, and Metal Gear Survive was proof of that. Today, however, the prospect feels far more realistic. Konami could outsource development to a competent studio or even build it in-house if they are confident enough.

What’s Next After Guns of the Patriots?

MGS Delta Snake Eater looks good!

Canonically and chronologically, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots served as the series’ ending, closing with one of the most emotional conclusions in gaming history, complete with its infamous 71-minute cutscene. The saga of the “terrible children” is finished, and Snake’s story is over. The future should be about moving forward with new characters, and the series already has plenty of possibilities.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance served as a spiritual successor, putting Raiden in the spotlight. However, licensing complications and the lack of PlatinumGames’ future involvement make a sequel or even a Remaster highly unlikely.

If Konami decides to continue the series, introducing a new protagonist connected to the intricate lore would make more sense. Returning to Solid Snake would feel like an insult to the canon the series has already established.

Where Should the Series Go?

Raiden was a breath of fresh air.

Personally, I would rather see Konami build something fresh within the Metal Gear universe instead of directly continuing the mainline series. There is so much untapped potential in characters like Grey Fox, Eva, Young Ocelot, or even a prequel centered on The Boss during World War II.

A future Metal Gear Solid game does not need Kojima’s signature brand of layered exposition to work. If Konami can identify what aspects of the franchise resonate most with fans and refine them, a new Metal Gear entry might just succeed in carving out its own legacy.
