  • Quick Answer: Dissidia Duellum is an upcoming mobile gacha game in the Final Fantasy series, featuring 3v3 combat, character pulls, and a March 2026 release window.

Ask anyone who grew up with a PlayStation Portable about Dissidia Final Fantasy, Square Enix’s “fighting” game, and they will likely say it is one of the best games they have ever played. The sheer amount of fan service was enough to make a 13-year-old kid melt with joy. Seeing iconic Final Fantasy characters like Cloud Strife casually conversing with Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII was something my teenage self could never have imagined. Yet it was real, and it already happened almost two decades ago.

But Dissidia and its sequel, Dissidia 012 (Duodecim) Final Fantasy, are nothing but a memory now. Square Enix moved on after the PSP’s unfortunate end, and since then, no game has truly captured the magic of the original titles. Not even their attempt to revive the series with Dissidia Final Fantasy NT managed to recapture that spark.

A Brief Dissidia Final Fantasy Recap

NT was an unmitigated disaster that barely resembled the magic of its predecessors. While it had a decent two-year run, it did not attract the same kind of audience that revered the PlayStation Portable classics. As a result, Square Enix eventually ended support for the game. It is still playable today, but no new content is coming.

Following the failure of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, the series continued with Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia. While it was not the familiar fighting game fans had hoped for, it was an adorable bite-sized turn-based RPG that managed to capture some of the magic of the original titles. I never personally played it, but many fans believed it served as a great appetizer for the massive Final Fantasy franchise. Sure, it had gacha elements, but seeing their favorite characters together again was still something special.

Unfortunately, the game did not meet Square Enix’s expectations and was eventually shut down in February 2024. It had a lengthy seven-year run and built a community of players who genuinely enjoyed it, but it was no longer profitable for Square Enix. As a result, the game was delisted from all platforms.

After this string of losses, the franchise once again fell dormant and effectively gathered dust somewhere on Square Enix’s shelves. It simply waited for someone within the company, perhaps an executive, who believed another Dissidia game could still break through the market.

Lo and behold, someone did remember Dissidia. The result? Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, a brand-new entry in a series fans have long hoped to see return. Many were excited to learn that Square Enix had not forgotten one of its most beloved spin-offs. But when the company confirmed that the new title would not be a console game but instead a mobile release, excitement quickly turned into apprehension. For some fans, including myself, it turned into outright disappointment.

Dissidia Duellum’s Gameplay

Duellum is essentially Square Enix’s latest attempt at a gacha-driven mobile game. Fans expecting the return of the series’ iconic one-on-one battles will likely be disappointed to learn that it retains NT’s 3v3 format. On top of that, Duellum’s gameplay loop borrows ideas from popular MOBAs, pitting a team of three against another team of three in traditional third-person combat.

The game blends PvE and PvP elements, forcing players to fight iconic Final Fantasy bosses that appear on the battlefield while also dealing with the opposing team. In many ways, it feels similar to the Gambit mode from Destiny 2. However, instead of a first-person shooter, the experience plays out from a third-person perspective with the familiar mobile UI often seen in many modern mobile games.

Dissidia Duellum’s Worries and Concerns

One of the things that discouraged me from playing is the fact that, instead of having every playable character available from the start, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy requires tickets that can be used to “pull” for your favorite characters from its unlockable pool. Personally, this was my first red flag. I have had my fair share of gacha game experiences. While I enjoy HoyoVerse's offerings like Zenless Zone Zero and Genshin Impact, playing yet another gacha game is simply too much for me. Now that Square Enix has returned to the live-service mobile gold rush, turning one of my beloved Final Fantasy spin-offs into a gacha title felt almost like a betrayal.

Early reception of the game has been lukewarm. While it is exciting to see characters like Terra Branford (FFVI), Lightning (FFXIII), and Zidane Tribal (FFIX) in outfits inspired by modern fashion, the initial reveal did little to inspire confidence among longtime fans. Even the official subreddit, r/DissidiaDuellumFF, saw fans voicing worries about the game’s longevity, with some openly betting on how long it would survive in the mobile market.

Square Enix’s Refusal to Learn from Past Mistakes

These worries are understandable, given Square Enix’s history of mobile game failures over the past several years. Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia are far from the only titles that were shut down after underperforming.

Other notable closures include:

  • Final Fantasy Brave Exvius – shut down globally in October 2024.
  • War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius – Japan-only release in November 2019, lasted five years before ending service.
  • Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier – a battle royale mobile game, shut down in January 2023 after two years.
  • Final Fantasy Record Keeper – A personal favorite of mine due to nostalgia, but was shut down in 2022.
  • Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link – a Pokemon GO-style game that was stuck in development for six years before cancellation.

Fan concerns are pretty much valid. Square Enix has rarely had a truly successful mobile entry, and each closure reinforces skepticism whenever the company announces a new mobile game, including Dissidia Duellum.

I’m not saying there is no market for the upcoming Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy. There will be whales, sure, and there will also be loyal players curious to try its new systems. I would definitely give it a shot when it comes out, but I don’t see myself playing it long-term. There are simply too many games on the market that deserve my attention.

So what happens now? Dissidia Duellum has yet to be released. With a launch window set for March 2026 for Android and iOS, interested players can already pre-register and receive extra tickets to pull their favorite Final Fantasy characters.

Whether it turns out to be another successful game or another mobile cash-grab disaster, here’s hoping that Square Enix finally learns its lesson. Fans deserve more high-quality Final Fantasy spin-offs, or at the very least, a game that is nurtured and maintained instead of being abandoned after any instance of dwindling profits.
