Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that developer Drew Harrison is no longer a part of Sucker Punch following social media comments mocking the murder of conservative political activist Charles Kirk.
News outlet Kotaku stated that Sony had confirmed the departure of Harrison from Sucker Punch without going into further details. If you’re out of the loop, the now former SP dev that most recently worked on Ghost of Yotei mocked the assassination of Charles Kirk. “I hope the shooter’s name is Mario so that Luigi knows his bro got his back,” she posted, making a tongue-in-cheek reference to Luigi Mangione, who is accused of assassinating UnitedHealthCare's CEO.
Outrage has surfaced all over social media, flooding every Ghost of Yotei post on X (formerly known as Twitter) and YouTube video. Some deemed the decision to part ways with Drew Harrison a correct one, few others believe the outrage to be blown out of proportion and that the developer did not deserve to lose her job.
As for Harrison, she doubled down via Bluesky, stating that she wouldn’t have it any other way, even if it ended up costing her job. “If standing up against fascism is what cost me my dream job I held for 10 years, I would do it again 100x stronger.”
Ghost of Yotei was already getting a mixed reception from the gaming community online. It has big shoes to fill as a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. It’ll be interesting to see if all of this controversy ends up spilling to the mainstream and ends up hurting the game commercially.
Remember that Ghost of Yotei will launch exclusively for the PlayStation 5 this upcoming October 2. It’s expected that a PC port will come later, potentially in 2026, but Sucker Punch has not confirmed plans for it.
