Square Enix Announces Star Ocean: The Divine Force for Release Next Year

Square Enix celebrated Star Ocean's 25th anniversary by announcing a brand-new Star Ocean during the October State of Play - Star Ocean: The Divine Force. It's billed as the biggest and mightiest game in the series and takes place in a vast galaxy suffering under the brutal yoke of the Pangalatic Federation.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force will release on PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam sometime in 2022.

Here's how Square Enix describes the story:

The Pangalactic Federation. From their earliest days in the Sol System, this organization has sought to bring peace and tranquility to the galactic multitudes. As their reach has expanded through the universe, many a hero has served under their banner; saviors to planets in need.
But by the year 583 SD, things have changed. The once peaceful Pangalactic Federation is now known for assimilating planets against their will. Once standing for justice, they are now wreathed in darkness.

The series continues its tradition of having dual protagonists and follows Raymond, a merchant captain from the Federation, and Laeticia, a princess on one of the underdeveloped systems.

Raymond and Laeticia's paths literally collide when he crash lands on her planet, though there's a range of other playable characters as well. Square Enix says you'll get completely different narratives depending on which protagonist you choose, and beyond that, your choices shape how the story unfolds.

The Divine Force is the biggest Star Ocean yet, and you're free to roam and even fly ships around the map as you please. It's also the "fastest and mightiest" Star Ocean, though the debut trailer doesn't show any of the game's combat.
