Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO cancelled after 'Dispute with Tencent'

Amazon Game Studios have been working hard to produce some quality titles for us to enjoy like New World and Lost Within.

However, it seems their latest attempt at making an MMO has now unfortunately fallen through.

LOTR Game Cancelled

The Lord of the Rings MMO that Amazon has been working on has now been cancelled due to a dispute between Amazon and Tencent.

An Amazon spokesperson has confirmed that they "have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time, we love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers".

The team currently developing the game will be moved to other projects Amazon are currently working towards.

The LOTR MMO was announced back in September 2018. This means it's likely some sort of version of the game does exist.

MMO Potential

The Amazon game Studios Vice President, Christoph Hartmann, has stressed his interest in the LOTR universe.

"Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers tremendous opportunity to play and create."

Amazon currently has plans to make a Lord of the Rings TV series, still giving them the opportunity to explore the Middle-earth lore.

In the future, we hope Amazon and Tencent can reach some sort of agreement so we can finally get our hands on a fully-fledged LOTR MMO.
