Sony Officially Acquires Bluepoint Games Into PlayStation Studios

Updated - September 30th, 2021

Confirming what we all suspected, Sony's now officially acquired Bluepoint Games into PlayStation Studios. Having developed Shadow of the Colossus's PS4 remake and Demon's Souls PS5 remake on PS5.

Marco Thrush, President of Bluepoint Games, offered further details via a PlayStation Blog post, stating:

We’re thrilled to have officially joined PlayStation Studios! Austin, Texas has been home base for Bluepoint from when we first founded the studio back in 2006 and we’re now a team of close to 70 super-talented creatives and growing. While the studio has certainly grown over the past 15 years, our cultural beliefs have remained the same- to always push the envelope and create the highest-quality games possible all while having fun doing it. The focus on culture has been instrumental to our success and we’re excited that PlayStation Studios shares a similar culture and vision.

Sony Officially Acquires Bluepoint Games Into Playstation Studios

Speaking to IGN in an interview before this announcement, Thrush confirmed that they're looking to explore original ideas in their next project, telling us:

Our next project, we're working on original content right now. We can't talk about what that is, but that's the next step in the evolution for us. The transition from remasters to remakes was to test ourselves and push ourselves harder for the next step.

It follows on from a deleted post back in June, where PlayStation Japan accidentally revealed the merger alongside news of Finnish developers Housemarque. It might be some time before we learn more about this next project, though you can find further details for the original story below.

In a a now-deleted post, it appears that Sony has also acquired Bluepoint Games within PlayStation Studios. Having announced earlier today that Finnish developers Housemarque are joining the wider PlayStation family, PlayStation Japan put up a similar image with Bluepoint Games included before quickly deleting it.

Having started life working on Blast Factor and the PS3 God of War Collection, Bluepoint Games has gained a reputation for remakes in the last few years, developing the PS4 edition of Shadow of the Colossus, followed up by last year's PS5 launch title, Demon's Souls.

Sony May Have Accidentally Revealed Bluepoint Games Acquisition

You can find a screencap of the tweet below, where it seems like they simply used the wrong image. As always, it's worth noting this acquisition news remains officially unconfirmed, but considering the header image comes from Sony's marketing team directly, it's very unlikely this would be false.

Much like Housemarque, most of Bluepoint Games' work has been PlayStation exclusive, although much of their wider history has been focused on remastering ports. Either way, we wouldn't be surprised to see this officially revealed soon, so if/when that does happen, we'll be sure to keep you informed.
