Sony Confirms Acquisition Of Returnal Developer Housemarque


After years of collaboration, Sony has just acquired Finnish developer Housemarque, best known for recent PS5 exclusive Returnal. Announced via the PlayStation Blog, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst released this statement about their latest acquisition:

Housemarque’s recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community. This addition enhances the creative force of PlayStation Studios, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Housemarque.

Sony Confirms Acquisition Of Returnal Developer Housemarque

While the blog itself doesn't contain much information, that's not all we've learned about this. Speaking in an interview with British GQ, Housemarque co-founder and managing director, Ilari Kuittinen, also weighed in on this buyout, stating:

I think Sony is the partner that’s best positioned to help develop even further. Let's face it, these are some of the best game developers in the world. So we're really proud to be part of that group and hope to collaborate and learn from them.

They now join heavy hitters like Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog within PlayStation Studios, though Housemarque's got a long history with Sony. While Returnal's arguably their most prominent game, we've previously seen hits like Super Stardust HD, Alienation and ResoGun come exclusively to PlayStation platforms.
