Your PS5 Will Already Be Out Of Date Next Year As Sony Is Reportedly Creating A Redesign For 2022

After only being on the market for 6 months, it looks like Sony is already planning to make your PS5 outdated with reports claiming that they are planning to release a new PS5 model in 2022.

The new report, which comes from DigiTimes via VGC says that supply chain sources claim that the redesigned PS5 will come with a "new semi-customized" 6nm CPU from AMD.

But, while you might be getting all excited at the idea of a new PS5 design, it is reported that this redesign will be purely components focused, and the externals won't be different at all.

This seems to suggest Sony is moving to an iPhone/mobile phone type model for its new system, offering a new iteration every few years, with very little difference between them.

So, whilst your PS5 might be shiny and new, straight from the box, or maybe you don't even have one yet, it will most likely be outshined by this newer model in 2022, due to its new CPU.

It isn't entirely clear if this redesign is due to the PS5 stock shortages and worldwide chip and component shortages or if this is a new strategy for Sony moving forward, improving the internals of the PS5 and how the console works every year or two.

It has long been the opinion that consoles are just becoming PCs as each generation passes by and this seems to have never been more the case than with the current generation if this report is accurate.

Personally, the idea of the PS5 or the console industry becoming more like the phone industry, with a new iteration every year, offering only small or no upgrades, is not something I am looking forward to.

As someone who enjoys buying the latest and greatest tech, I don't want to have to buy a new PS5 every few years, even if the only improvements come internally.

Granted, for the majority of people they won't even notice the difference and this could just be a one time upgrade, similar to the Nintendo Switch's second model which released shortly after the initial launch and offered more battery life on the system.

However, for those who buy new upgrades when they launch and the latest pieces of technology, console gaming might be set to become much more expensive.
