Shigeru Miyamoto Can't Stop Playing Pokémon GO

When you think of the name Shigeru Miyamoto, you might not initially think of Pokémon. While the legendary game designer did produce Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green, he's more commonly associated with the likes of Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, or Nintendogs. No, seriously, he also created Nintendogs.

However, as one of Nintendo's representative directors, Miyamoto recently attended the company's Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. Most of what went down understandably covered the business side of things, but a Q&A session at the end brought a more jovial tone - and shed some light on what Nintendo's director's get up to in their free time.

Shigeru Miyamoto Can't Stop Playing Pokémon GO

One question put it to the directors that those high up in the company should still enjoy playing games, even if their roles aren't to make them anymore. As such, it asked the panel - a veritable who's who of Nintendo legends - what their favourite games are.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa says his favourite game, presumably of all time, is Super Mario Bros., according to a translation by Nintendo Everything. However, it's Miyamoto's answer that really has us excited.

"I’m currently hooked on Pokémon GO," says Miyamoto. "This game, which I’m playing with my wife, is a dream come true of playing a game with my whole family. I’ve been enjoying Pokémon GO with my wife and neighbourhood friends for some two years now. The average person playing Pokémon GO in Japan is probably around 60 years old."

And who can blame him? Pokémon GO is in a great place right now, especially in the lead-up to Pokémon GO Fest 2021. We can just imagine Miyamoto popping on an Incense and walking around his neighbourhood catching an inventory full of Bulbasaur during the Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour tomorrow.

It's good to hear that such a legendary designer is enjoying the mobile game and playing with friends and family. Like gaming in general, Pokémon GO is at its best when it brings people together, and Miyamoto speaks to us all when he describes joining his friends to catch, battle, and trade.
