CD Projekt Red’s upcoming The Witcher Remake aims to recreate the original RPG in Unreal Engine 5. In order to bring the game to modern gamers, the studio is fixing many of the title’s outdated elements.
Following the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, CDPR is returning to The Witcher with this remake and an upcoming The Witcher 4. Alongside the in-development Cyberpunk sequel, the Polish mega-developer is certainly very busy.
Speaking to Edge Magazine, via TwistedVoxel, developer Jakub Rokosz explained that the upcoming The Witcher Remake will shape up some of its rough elements to “give it the justice it deserves.”
Rokosz explained that the team at CDPR and his studio Rebel Wolves are going through the original game to figure out what needs to be changed for modern audiences. Of course, the rough gameplay of the original will be replaced with better combat while the story will be touched up with an overhauled script.
“[We’re looking at parts that are] simply bad, outdated, and need to be remade,” Rokosz told the magazine. The new will aim to make a new version of the original game that is “both satisfying and still resonates with the feel of the original.”
Rokosz also explained that they have identified the “direct key pillars that can’t be discarded” from the original game. This means that some of the title’s most beloved elements — such as having to prepare for fights, or quests where your choices actually matter — will return with a fresh coat of paint in the new remake.
The Witcher Remake may also adopt the lighter tone of its sequels compared to the edgy, dreary, oppressive feel of the original game. While it will still keep its bite of dark fantasy, The Witcher 2 and Wild Hunt managed to find a better balance between the two tones.
There’s currently no concrete release date for the new Witcher game. However, the game is expected to release on PC, Xbox Series and PS5 sometime in 2026 or later.
