A screaming gamer looking at the Minecraft April Fools update

Breakdown

  • Minecraft released a new April Fools 2024 snapshot
  • The update added new mobs, bosses, a grappling hook and more
  • Gamers are upset at the free content being better than major updates and are having a totally normal reaction to it

Mojang’s latest April Fools add-on for the iconic survival crafting game Minecraft is amazing, and that’s annoying fans that are tired of the game’s restrained update structure.

The Minecraft 2024 April Fools snapshot added a poisonous potato theme to the game. This snapshot added five poisonous themed biomes infected by the new poison taters as well as new items. Will we see these in the upcoming Minecraft movie?

You’ll be able to use a potato peeler to slice and dice the poisonous spuds, as well as use a Lashing Potato, aka a grappling hook, to swing around the blocky environments. There’s also themed mobs and themed clothing. There’s a lot of effort here, and that’s why fans are upset.

In response to the brilliant April Fools update, Minecraft fans took to social media to complain. With Minecraft now a complete game, Mojang’s updates to the survival title have been rather conservative instead of adding major movement abilities or game-changing biomes to the title.

Fans of the game have taken to the annual April Fools update almost as an insult with many feeling offended at the arrival of game-changing content for a limited event.

“It’s funny how Mojang will rework the whole game for an April Fools update just for it to be all gone within a day but will take forever to push and update and make us vote on 3 mobs,” one fan commented on the announcement video.

“So we can make a new boss and dimension for an April Fools joke, but still no End update,” screamed another.

“MOJANG IS SO DISGUSTING THAT IT GIVES A HUGE UPDATE ON APRIL 1ST PRANK WHILE NOT GIVING ANYTHING TO THE NEW VERSION IN MINECRAFT,” shouted one user in all-caps. “YOU ARE A SERIOUS SON OF A B*TCH.”

Despite adding free content to the game for April Fools as the team does every year, Mojang’s fun event was mostly met with complaints and criticisms. As one of the most popular games of all time, Minecraft has seen over a decade of consistent updates. While these updates haven’t been as vast and sweeping as games like Fortnite, they’re still substantial.

After all, Minecraft is a good game available on nearly every platform and with a strong PC modding community offering the best Minecraft mods. Really, it doesn’t need any updates right now, but it gets them. Then again, with gamers spending their time ranting about Dragon’s Dogma 2’s easily earnable in-game microtransactions or bullying Spider-Man 2’s Mary Jane voice actor off social media, it’s no surprise that a free update is met with massive criticism.
