Breakdown

  • A preview confirmed that Hellblade 2 will stay at 30fps for Xbox systems
  • The game is stuck at 30fps for a more cinematic experience, supposedly
  • Current-gen systems are reaching their limit

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 looks like it’s going to be a solid Xbox Series exclusive, but fans hoping for a smooth 60fps might be disappointed. In what’s becoming a normal trend, the second Hellblade game will only run at 30fps on Xbox Series consoles, with no graphics modes to choose from.

A preview from GamePro (via VGC) confirmed that the upcoming Ninja Theory game will only run at 30fps with a dynamic resolution for both Xbox Series X and S. Visual effects director Mark Slater-Tunstill said the game will run at 30fps so it can feel more cinematic, similar to 24fps movies.

While Hellblade 2 is stuck at 30fps on Xbox Series consoles, the PC version will be able to run at a higher framerate. This is far from surprising since computers can be upgraded and can be stronger than even current-gen consoles, so fans might be able to expect 60fps there.

Now that we’re a few years into the current console generation, games are starting to reach their limits and can’t perform at the level fans were hoping for. Dragon’s Dogma 2 only runs at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series, with the PC version sometimes struggling to get that kind of performance. Starfield is also limited to 30fps on Xbox Series and PC.

Just to be clear, 30fps is a very playable experience and is the standard for most games, so there’s no issue with Hellblade 2 having this framerate. It would have been nice to see this game perform at a higher level, but there’s only so much that these current-gen systems can do.

There’s a lot to like about Ninja Theory’s upcoming sequel, as the game will be a short but sweet digital-only experience. While we do love longer games, Ninja Theory is catering to those who want shorter, yet, more meaningful game experiences.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is coming out on May 21 for Xbox Series systems and PC. Game Pass users will get this exclusive automatically.
