While the Grand Theft Auto series has been “woke” in the definitive term since its inception, the adoption of the term by right-wing drifters to complain about the addition of female characters or identity politics into recent stories.

As revealed in the GTA 6 trailer, the new open world game will feature the series’ first female protagonist, Lucia, since its jump into 3D. Of course, this led to many loudmouths online complaining because they hate women.

In an interview with IGN, Luke praised the addition of Lucia, calling her a great addition to the series.

“Lucia's hard, man,” the actor told the outlet. “In the trailer, she looked good."

Luke continued to praise Rockstar’s addition of Lucia, calling the character’s detractors “clowns” for being unable to tolerate one playable woman in a video game.

“You get a lot of these clowns out here going, 'Rockstar's going woke, they're caving into the wokeness of the world',” Luke said. “First of all, there's been other female protagonists in the past, but not in something as huge as this."

With 46% of US gamers in 2023 being female (source), compared to 53% male and 1% other, women make up almost half of the gaming audience worldwide. Some of the biggest streamers are gamers, major video games are created and written by women (who isn’t a fan of Amy Hennig?) but a loud minority of bigots can’t stand a different gender succeeding.

Grand Theft Auto as a series has always been “woke”, created by British leftists mocking American politics, gun culture and more. Just turn on the radio and listen for once. GTA 6 is only set to continue this trend of politically aware social commentary, albeit with a Bonnie and Clyde-esque main narrative.

GTA 6 is releasing on Xbox and PlayStation consoles in 2025. A PC release hasn’t been announced, but will likely release sometime after.
